Contractors abandon sites as projects stall in FCT

Contractors handling various projects in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, have abandoned the sites, stalling infrastructural development in the nation’s capital.
Investigation showed that works had stopped on the major road linking Area One roundabout to Galadima roundabout with motorists facing serious traffic gridlock at the junction in the mornings and evenings.
Checks also indicated that works on the Goodluck Jonathan Expressway which was almost concluded had slowed down considerably.
The same thing was observed at Road S11 in the Lokogoma District where a contractor providing engineering infrastructure to stop flooding in the area had slowed down activities.
A retired policeman, Kenneth Nwoga, and his two children, Prestige and Winner, had drowned in a flood at Road S11 near Jubilee Estate, Lokogoma District, Abuja, on August 17, 2017.
Following the incident, the Federal Capital Development Authority in June closed down the road where the incident occurred for construction.
The FCDA in a letter dated June 7, 2018, signed by Director, Engineering Services, S. Ahmad, informed residents of the temporary closure of the arterial S11 road at the Ring Road II intersection for commencement of construction work.
But four months after, the project had not recorded much progress, causing serious traffic gridlock in the area.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a resident stated that the blockade of the road had compounded the traffic situation in the area, adding that driving out of the area every morning had become a nightmare.
“The FCDA has only succeeded in compounding the traffic jam in the area because the government has blocked the road. Since moving to site, the contractor has been working at the main culvert near the main road. I don’t know why the culvert should take almost four months to complete,” he noted.
