Akwa-Ibom Assembly declares 5 seats vavant

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly yesterday declared Itu, Etim Ekpo/Ika, Ikono, Mkpat Enin and Essien Udim Constituency seats vacant.
The affected lawmakers are Idongesit Ituen, Itu; Gabriel Toby, Etim Ekpo/Ika; Victor Udofia, Ikono; Otobong Ndem, Mkpat Enin and Nse Ntuen, Essien Udim.
Speaker Onofiok Luke declared their seats vacant under tight security following the invasion of the house by supporters of some of them.
The supporters, alleged to be youths from the All Progressive Congress, had blocked the entrance to the Assembly complex, chanting songs and displaying placards against the decision of the speaker to withdraw recognition of the affected lawmakers as representatives of their constituencies.
The Commissioner of Police, Bassey Abang, who was in the Assembly complex to assess the situation, assured the lawmakers of safety.
The spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Ini Ememobong, had earlier issued a statement alleging a planned attack on the House of Assembly.
The House also passed a resolution urging Governor Udom Emmanuel to name the Akwa Ibom
International Airport or Akwa Ibom State University after Obong Victor Attah to mark his 80th birthday, being the first governor of the state after the return to democratic rule in 1999.
