Police dismiss inspector posthumously over LASTMA official’s death

The Lagos State Police Commissioner, Imohimi Edgal, has ordered the dismissal of a police Inspector, Olukunle Olonade, for allegedly killing a 46-year-old official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) on Wednesday.
Olonade, attached to the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS), Ikeja, was alleged to have shot dead the LASTMA official, Rotimi Adeyemo, who had stopped him when he (Olonade) violated a traffic rule at Iyana-Ipaja in the Alimosho local government area of the state.
But as the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Chike Oti, disclosed yesterday, Olonade himself was mobbed by the crowd that gathered after he had shot Adeyemo in the head, killing him.
According to Oti, although the police Inspector didn’t immediately die having been rescued at the scene by a team of policemen, he later gave up the ghost on his way to the hospital.
Narrating what happened, Oti said that on the Wednesday, November 28, 2018, at about 6pm, Olonade, a police Inspector attached to the FSARS, Ikeja, drove in a Toyota Highlander SUV registration number LSR 277 BJ against traffic along the Iyana-Ipaja road and was stopped by Adeyemo.
He said that the two men disagreed with each other, following which Olonade dashed back into his vehicle, brought out a gun and shot the LASTMA official to death.
“Consequently, an irate mob, which thought that the gunman was an armed hoodlum because he was in mufti, descended on him and beat him to a stupor.
“Although he was later rescued by a team of policemen drafted to the scene, he later gave up the ghost while being rushed to a hospital.
“The serial number of the pistol recovered at the scene was checked in the system and it revealed the bearer as Inspector Olukunle Olonade attached to FSARS Ikeja,” he said.
Oti said that the Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, had directed that the late Inspector Olonade be tried posthumously in Orderly Room and be recommended for dismissal from the Force.
